Funding

The Clothworkers Foundation

The Clothworkers' Foundation was set up on 18 July 1977 by The Clothworkers' Company. It is now the independent charitable arm for the whole of the Company's charitable work.

Since the establishment of the Foundation over 25 years ago, total grants made amount to circa £61m.

What is the funding for?
The Clothworkers’ Foundation aims through its funding to improve the quality of life, particularly for people and communities facing disadvantage.

There are two grant programmes:

  1. Main Grants Programme is open to UK registered charities:
    - with an annual turnover of under £10m
    - applying for a grant of over £1,000 for capital costs
  2. Small Grants Programme is open to UK registered charities:
    - with an annual turnover under £250,000
    - applying for a grant of between £500 and £10,000 for capital costs

A charity which has received a grant in either the Main Grants Programme or the Small Grants Programme cannot apply again for at least five years.

Applications to the Main Grants Programme and Small Grants Programme must fall under one of the following areas:

Encouragement of Young People
Preference will be given to organisations working with economically disadvantaged youth in deprived areas.

Social Inclusion
Support for organisations which seek to tackle such problems as substance abuse, homelessness, offending and family breakdown.

Elderly
Priority will be given to projects focusing on those in need or at risk of social exclusion.

Disability
Support for organisations tackling the needs of the physically and/or mentally disabled, but not work purely to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

Visual impairment
Support for organisations addressing the needs of blind or visually impaired people.

Textiles
UK academic institutions involved in textiles, technical textiles and colour science. Heritage projects involving textiles collections, particularly those of national importance.

They will cover Capital costs to include:
- Building purchase and renovation
- Equipment (including IT hardware)
- Vehicles
- Training costs and professional fees relating to capital projects being funded by us

They do not fund revenue costs including:
- Running costs* for your charity/project
- Events
- Training costs (unless they are included as part of a larger capital appeal)

*Ineligible costs include: salaries, expenses, administration, hire of space/premises, marketing and publicity, utility bills.

For charities which, by their nature, have no capital requirements, they will consider funding one-off projects such as production of publications (not regular newsletters etc) or setting up a new website.

Textile Heritage Projects
- Their primary interest is in supporting the cataloguing, indexing, storing, conserving, display and access to important UK textile collections and archives.
- They wish to encourage access to past history in order to stimulate scholarly research and future design.
- They are more interested in cloth and its manufacture than costumes.
- Their priority is British textiles.
- They will not fund the purchase of art textiles.
