Girls on the Move

Girls on the Move is a new funding programme designed to increase physical activity levels in girls and young women in Scotland. A sum of £450,000 over three years has been made available by the Robertson Trust and the Scottish Government Health Improvements Budget.

Participation Programme

Large Grant Scheme

What is the funding for?
This programme has been designed to support charities in Scotland working with young people who want to encourage girls and young women to become physically active and increase their confidence and self esteem. Projects must promote and increase awareness of the health and well being benefits of exercise for girls and young women between the ages of 9 and 16. Projects seeking funding must also encourage the participation of volunteers and involve girls and young women in the design and delivery.

How much money is available?
Awards of up to £2,000 can be made. The programme will fund part-time or sessional staff costs, volunteer expenses, capital start-up costs including equipment and additional overhead costs incurred as a direct result of running the project.

Who can apply?
Applications are welcomed from constituted groups working with young women in Scotland, aged 12 – 18 years, who are currently not physically active. Applications targeting the following groups will be particularly welcome:
• Girls and young women living in disadvantaged communities or those who are homeless or in care
• Girls and young women with disabilities or mental health issues
• Girls and young women from black and ethnic minority backgrounds
• Young women who are mothers of young children

Small Grant Scheme:

Girls on the Move is now offering small grants through Youth Scotland's Get Up and Go resource.

Get Up and Go is a series of challenges designed to encourage young people to make positive lifestyle choices. Groups that qualify for Girls on the Move criteria can apply for grants of £50 per challenge. Involvement in Get Up and Go can also be accredited through the Dynamic Youth Awards.
