Funding

Woodward Charitable Trust

The Woodward Charitable Trust is one of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts. The Trusts share a common administration, but are otherwise independent of each other.

What is the funding for?

There are two types of funding: General and Children's Playscheme

General: Funding Priorities

1. Homelessness, especially affecting young people and women, and covering facilities such as women's refuges;
2. Prisons and prisoners, with particular emphasis on post-release help and on families of offenders and ex-offenders;
3. Travellers;
4. Addiction, including projects tackling the social exclusion elements and preventative programmes;
5. People experiencing domestic violence.

Trustees may also consider

6. Arts outreach work by local groups, particularly in fields that do not attract funding from other Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts;
7. Disability projects;
8. Environmental projects, especially with a strong education element, provided they are distinctive and not merely a part of current fashion.

Children's Playschemes

Each year the trustees of the Woodward Charitable Trust set aside funds for summer playschemes for children between the ages of 5-16 years.

Preference is given to:

* small local playschemes that provide a wide-ranging programme of activities
* schemes that involve a large number of children
* schemes catering for those from disadvantaged backgrounds or that have a disability
* schemes that are inclusive such as projects that work with children from a range of backgrounds, abilities and race
* schemes where past users are encouraged to come back and help as volunteers

How much money is available?

General Grants: Small grants:£100-£5,000 (around 40-50 grants made per year, usually under £5,000, to projects within areas 1-8 above on a one-off basis)
- Major grants: over £10,000 (around 5-10 grants made per year, usually to projects within areas 1-5 above and spread over a number of years). Applications for major grants will only be considered if they are discussed with the administrator prior to submission.
- Children's Summer Playscheme grants, £500-£2,000 (usually about 30-40 grants made each year on a one-off basis)

Who can apply?

Applicants must be registered charities with income of less than £250,000 for General Grants and £100,000 for Summer Playscheme. Preference is given to small, locally-based charities.

When to apply

All summer playscheme application forms should be received no later that April 2010 but check the website for the exact date.

Trustees review general applications twice a year, usually in January and July. The next deadline for General applications is 24 May 2010.

How to apply
The application form is available by post, email (contact@woodwardcharitabletrust.org.uk) or from the Applications section of the website . Annual report & accounts and project budgets must be submitted with all applications whether they are via the website, email or post. The application form should be completed without exceeding one page. If supplementary information is sent this should be separate from the information requested by the Trustees on their form.

Potential applicants are encouraged to telephone the administrator, Karin Hooper, on 020 7410 0330 to discuss their work if they think it might meet the Trustees' criteria. Trustees are keen to spare charities the wasted time involved in applying when there is no prospect of success.
